Camden Road New Church

New build residential

Camden Road New Church

Camden | City of London Corporation | Ongoing

Part of our wider proposal for the Islington Arts Factory site, the refurbishment and residential conversion of the former church, currently used as a community arts venue to be rehoused elsewhere on site, will ensure the long-term future of the buildings and provide an opportunity to carry out repairs to the original building fabric. The former Swedenborgian Chapel and adjacent Sunday School both built in 1873 are designated together as a local landmark within Hillmarton Conservation Area.

The former church will provide seven new apartments of varying sizes, with internal layouts designed to make use of existing floors, walls, window and door openings as far as possible. Most of the units are triplexes, arranged over three floors; one apartment inhabits the church tower. The characterful entrance to the Sunday School will also be retained to provide a grand entrance to one of the new apartments.

We also plan to reinstate the church spire, removed due to corrosion. It could be designed to match the remaining part of the spire or could also be an opportunity to launch a public art competition to design a more contemporary new spire.
