Duke Street Church shortlisted for the Richmond Society's Award

We are delighted that our renovation of Duke Street Church is being considered for the Richmond Society’s Award for a distinguished contribution to Richmond 2022. We look forward to attending the presentation by the Deputy Mayor of the Borough Councillor Rhi Lee next week.

The renovation of this independent evangelical church in Richmond Green conservation area is a special and rewarding community project for the practice. It has been carried forward from early feasibility to construction with an engaged and positive relationship developed between architect, client and congregation.

Duke Street Church, designed by H. Hubbard Ford (who worked with Sir Basil Spence at the University of Sussex), replaced a Victorian church outgrown by the congregation. The main Auditorium had changed very little since completion in 1962.

At the outset of the project, we worked with Duke Street trustees to tease out a brief for: a flexible and adaptable space; a building made safe and more accessible; and to future-proof the construction for the next 60 years, including building environmental performance, audio-visual installation and new robustness of detail and finishes.

Our design aims to strike a balance between celebrating and enhancing the coherent 1960s quality and character; and providing a contemporary, transformed, and versatile interior to support the growth of the church.
