The Tourist Information Centre is situated on The Hard adjacent to the Grade I listed dockyard.
Providing additional accommodation, disabled access and improved visitor flow, the zinc-clad extension is a careful insertion between the grade I listed historic wall and the 19th century cottage that housed the existing tourist information office. The project seeks to enhance the architectural qualities of the building in relation to the dockyard wall, and to contribute to the ongoing improvement works carried out on The Hard and the surrounding area.
The lightweight canopy roof structure is entirely independent of the historic wall and the meeting point of new and old is articulated by a continuous strip of glazing, which introduces natural light above the workspace in the reception hall.
