Schoolhouse Yard

Woolwich | Gallions Housing Association & Tilfen Land | Completed

Schoolhouse Yard is a building of 38 apartments, over a third of which are shared ownership, situated on a sloping site alongside a former London Board School, completing the frontage to Bloomfield Road. The building was designed to complement the neighbouring listed, Victorian Schoolhouse, utilising traditional stock brick to enhance the historic character of the site.

On the front facade the strong, elegantly proportioned, paired window pattern of the old school is repeated together with the varied gable roof profile. The new building skilfully steps down to the scale of adjacent terraced housing.

The efficient stairwell and communal corridors, which serve eight apartments per floor, benefit from natural daylight via a light well in the centre of the floor plan and skylight above the stair.

In a difficult setting [Studio Partington] has managed to produce a modern building which is sensitive to its listed neighbours while displaying real contemporary quality and air. We are delighted with the results.
