New buildings revealed at Andover Estate!

The scaffolding has been struck showing new buildings looking good against a backdrop of Autumn leaves. The project covering 43 new homes over 5 sites is really coming together. Sites include 3 new buildings and 2 involving retrofit of occupied building undercrofts into new homes and affordable workspace for Islington residents. Public realm improvements including new paving, landscape and lighting were competed first and are already in use.

Our masterplan for Andover Estate for Islington Council delivers high quality placemaking by working with the existing community and the potential of the existing estate buildings and public realm. The project is unusual in having been initiated by residents (after many years of uncertainty about the estate’s future) and has been designed with project and development managers, residents steering groups, tenants and residents’ association stakeholders, local councillors and social enterprises actively involved. Studio Partington have been project lead on design, master planning, and consultation for eight years.

The large-scale renewal is a complex mix of retrofit, repurposing, and new build infill, integrated through estate-wide improvements to public open space. The ‘landscape masterplan’ creates pedestrian priority, desirable and safe walking routes, safe play areas, and generous landscape and outdoor spaces that encourage social investment and shared participation in community and neighbourly activity to the benefit of all residents and those passing through the estate.
