Andover Estate garage conversions
Holloway | London Borough of Islington | Completed 2024
The conversion of undercroft garages and dark, ground floor flats on Andover Estate into bright, two bedroom homes with private south-facing gardens.
Redundant undercroft garages and poorly performing single aspect one-bed homes have been replaced with dual aspect two-and three-bed, fully accessible homes. Each home now has a welcoming front door facing a newly landscaped ‘Home Zone’ with bright living rooms opening onto a private garden. There are a total of 6 homes: 4 x 2bed 3 person flats, 2 x 3bed 5 person flats (accessible).
Replacing the blank facades of the garages’ ‘up-and-over’ metal doors, the street frontage has been activated with new entrances and windows providing passive surveillance at ground level.
The first six homes represent the pilot for a further 12 garage conversions across the estate which already have outline planning consent.
The garage conversions meet a growing need for existing residents of the estate for homes with step-free access. Combined with public realm, landscape and lighting improvements the conversions also deliver secure communal entrances and new lift access to the existing upper-level homes.
