As Future Homes Standard approaches, heat pumps will become the primary heating system in new homes. With heat pumps set to become the primary heating solution under the Future Homes Standard, early spatial and layout decisions are now the biggest factors influencing performance, compliance and cost. This guide gives architects the essentials to get those decisions right from day one. The guide aims to reduce redesign and rework, avoid gas-based legacy assumptions, and build confidence in delivering low-carbon heating at scale.

  • Plan enough space – internal (dedicated cupboard, pipework and maintenance access) and space around the unit externally.

  • Optimise building fabric for efficiency and comfort – u-values, airtightness and thermal bridging need to be carefully designed; construction quality and workmanship is key.

  • Heat pumps are not boilers – system design, emitter sizing, flow temperatures and controls need thorough consideration.

  • Support residents – with intuitive controls and education on operation and expectations.
