Trial and Improvement
This month we are hosting Golden Lane Estate residents at Bayer House to view trial installations of new vacuum glazing in existing aluminium window frames.
New glazing has been installed in the vertical sliding window in the living room and horizontal sliding window in the bedroom plus new blue textured glass spandrel panel. The aim of the work is to retain as much of the historic fabric as possible while improving thermal performance (a 74% reduction in heat loss through vacuum glazing is predicted). Some adaptation was found to be needed: a new aluminium insert to the window frames to accommodate thicker glass, a larger and heavier counterbalance for the vertical sliding mechanism and new roller bearings to help the bedroom window slide across smoothly.
